Beautiful Shibazakura in Hitsujiyama Park
Located in Saitama Prefecture, Hitsujiyama Park literally translates to “Sheep Mountain Park”. Tourists come from all over Japan to see this park come springtime.
Why? Well, with a name like that you would expect there to be sheep everywhere, but there aren’t. So if it isn’t sheep bringing people to this park, then what is it?
Shibazakura, or “lawn cherry blossoms” are cute pink flowers that cover the lawn. These aren’t at all cherry blossoms, but they’re pink like them, which is where the nickname comes from.
In English they’re known as pink moss or moss phlox, and come April, they’re everywhere in Japan.
A few parks around the country put on displays of them, including Hitsujiyama Park. Yes, they look cute anywhere in the country, but it isn’t until you see a whole blanket of them, that they look truly breathtaking.
Just like for cherry blossoms, websites pop up in spring detailing the peak forecast of these flowers so travelers don’t miss them. While they usually last from April until June, there are only a few weeks where they are in full bloom.
These flowers blossom in different shades of pinks and whites. What’s special about Hitsujiyama Park, is that they don’t just let them grow everywhere– the cultivate them and grow them in special designs.
Around the park there are around 400,000 of these flowers.
While the park is spacious, it also gets very crowded during this time, especially if you visit near Golden Week (the last few days of April and first few days of May).
On one hand, it’s great that the park is located very close to Tokyo, making it easy for tourists to visit, but on the other, it just means that it’s even more crowded!
If you can, go during the week rather than weekends and before or after Golden Week. You’ll probably be stopping every two minutes to take photos, so prepare to spend at least an hour or two as you walk around this gorgeous park.
