Many people want to see castles when they come to Japan. However, as most people end up visiting Tokyo, there aren’t many castles near by.

For those look for an easy day trip from Tokyo in order to see castles, I highly recommend a visit to Chiba Castle. This site can actually be visited as only a half-day trip and it’s easily reached by train.

Chiba Castle, or Inohana Castle, is located inside Inohana Park in Chiba City.

The Chiba family built this castle in 1126. It was attacked and then abandoned in the mid 1400s. The castle started to deteriorate quite a bit, so the current castle you see today is actually a reconstruction from 1967.

It now houses the Chiba City Folk Museum.

The inside considered of five floors and the exhibits are mainly related to the Chiba Clan. You’ll find all sorts of artifacts like swords, guns, and other samurai weapons.

The museum also talks a lot about Chiba’s history and includes photos comparing it from the early 1900s until now.

I won’t say it’s the most exciting of castles or castle museums, but unlike most museums this one actually offers (basic) English descriptions for all of the items, making it a tourist friendly location.

In front of the castle you’ll see a castle of the castle’s founder, Tsuneshige Chiba, on a horse.

Even though it’s a reconstruction, the outside of this castle is very beautiful. It is very clean and seems untouched.

It’s also nice because it’s surrounded by beautiful parks that are filled with cherry blossoms. Despite this, not many people visit this castle even during the spring time. That makes it nice though because you know the grounds will always be peaceful.

It would be the perfect spot to pack a lunch to enjoy with friends or family!

If you’re expecting something grand like Himeji or Osaka Castle when you come here, unfortunately you’ll probably be disappointed. But if you’re just happy to see any Japanese castle and you only have time in Tokyo, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
