Chionin’s massive Sanmon Gate is the largest wooden gate in Japan.
It was built in 1621 by Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada.
It is National Treasure and is not open to public except certain days.
This year it was open to public until Nov. 27th due to
Honen Shonin 800th Memorial Anniversary.
You have to climb up very steep stairs, sometimes almost 90 degrees.
Scenery from Sanmon Gate’s balcony is beautiful!
Stairs behind the gate is leading to the main temple(MiedoHall) grounds.
Last Samurai shooting was held on this stairs.
