Japan Ukiyoe Museum in Matsumoto City, Sakai Family private collection since 18th century

The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum was established in 1982 by Mr. Tokichi Sakai,
who is the 10th generation of Sakai Family. The Sakai collection is internationally known
for the collection of c.a.          a hundred thousand ukiyo-e prints, paitings, scrolls,
old books and modern contemporary prints.

The Sakai collection extends back for five generations from the present CEO to Yoshiaki Sakai
(sixth generation, 1776-1842) who was the second richest merchant in Matsumoto
and built twelve big warehouses helind the shop. He was also art patron.

Yoshitaka Sakai(seventh generation, 1810-1869)also collected fine arts and ukiyo-e.
Utagawa Hiroshige panited his portrait in the kyoka poem book in 1836.
Touhyou-e Sakai(eighth generation, 1844-1911) established Sakai Kou-Ko-Dou Gallery
in 1870 at kanda in Tokyo(currently located in front of the Imperial Hotel) and
through his knowledge and critical judgement he fostered many students and
scholars of ukiyo-e community.
Shoukiti Sakai(ninth generation, 1878-1942)founded “Ukiyo-e” -an academic periodical on ukiyo-e(fifty-five number), and scientifically studied ukiyo-e for the first time.
Toukichi Sakai(10th generation, 1915-1993) established this Museum under the
collaboration of his brothers, Teisuke and Senzaburou in 1982.

Museum is located just off the Matsumoto Interchange of Nagano Highway.
If you are coming to Matsumoto by Japan Railway, you can take taxi from
Matsumoto Station and it takes about 7 minutes.
The museum houses lots of high-quality prints by Hokusai, Eizan, Eisen,
Kunisada, Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, and Yoshitoshi and they are not
always displayed but it certainly worth visiting this ukiyo-e museum.
