As it is called “The Little Kyoto of Tohoku,” Kakunodate began as the Kubota domain’s castle town in the beginning of the Edo Period. Well preserved samurai houses are scattered around along Uchimachi samurai quarter, situated north west from the Kakunodate station. A number of wooden samurai houses and gardens are preserved and open as small museums or craft shops and cafes. People can take a look at Samurai and their families’ former residences and grasp an image of how ancient Japan was like.
